A Polish Viking Approaches: GIF Spotlight
One thing you cannot fault the Klitschko brothers/Bernd Boente matches for is a lack of pre-fight production values. Even the lesser name opponents like Mariusz Wach, the first ever Wladimir Klitschko challenger to have all of weight, height and reach over him, to my knowledge, received a very melodramatic intro, pertaining to his nickname, The Viking.
Just before this introduction, from the 2012 match in Berlin, the fans got another production from the nightmares and dreamscapes of modern man in Rocky The Musical. Which, again, really did happen.

Klitschko VS Wach, Prefaced By Madness: GIF Spotlight
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was November of 2012, in Berlin, Germany's O2 Arena. Not only did they host the literally, physically huge heavyweight title fight between Wladimir Klitschko and Mariusz Wach, but German theatricality, if nothing else, prevailed when they also hosted Sylvester Stallone and Rocky The Musical. I may be mistaken, but, let's say the actors are Drew Sarich as Rocky, Wietske van Tongeren as Adrian and Terence Archie as Apollo.
This really happened, just before Klitschko turned Mariusz Wach into Tex Cobb from the Holmes fight. I did not hallucinate this. The heavyweight championship of the world was contested following a brief musical play about fictional boxers. This really happened. I am not crazy.

When Gamboa Was A Tyson: GIF Spotlight
In July of 2008, Cuba's Yuriorkis Gamboa was one of boxing's baddest and most promising prospects. A fast, athletic finisher with dynamite in his gloves. On three day's notice, Al Seeger decided he'd give him a go for a North American title on ESPN's Friday Night Fights. It went very well for one of them, in the first round.
Gamboa became a major world titlist in 2009, yet the excitement and the KO's in his favor have mostly ended. He did have a Pier-Six Brawl with P4P name Terence Crawford in 2014, but his winning efforts tend to be fairly subdued affairs after a few years as a world titlist name, considering he was one of many who were treated as Tysonesque on the way to stardom. He is still a winning, world class fighter, however, having just taken a controversial decision over Jason Sosa. Respectfully, I miss the early Gamboa.

J. B. Smoove Coulda Been A Contender: GIF Spotlight
HBO Boxing on Facebook released a brief clip of comedian J. B. Smoove doing a little pugilistic hamming, back in September of 2017. Here was a near impression of Muhammad Ali, according to himself:
J. B. is also known to dominate scenes on Curb Your Enthusiasm with his inimitable gravitas, no matter the level of absurdity he is emitting from his comedic flux capacitor. Here, I'm not sure if he's actually meaning to imitate Muhammad Ali, or to imitate me when I'm imitating Muhammad Ali. I like it either way.

Marvelous Marvin's Reactions Are Easily GIF'd.
ESPN interviewed Marvelous Marvin Hagler while he was taking his latest trip to Canastota, New York, to see the induction of Mike Tyson, among others in the class, into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. It was 2011, and shown during a Friday Night Fights broadcast. The interviewer gave Marvelous all the due respect and Marvin ended the interview warmly with a "Ciao, ciao." as Italian folks tend to do.

Ricardo Lopez's Slip & Uppercut KO VS Ala Villamor: GIF Spotlight
The undefeated Hall of Fame Mexican legend Ricardo Lopez defended his title against Ala Villamor in March of 1996. This beauty of a move laid the Filipino challenger into Onepunchville. Incidentally, this same year, Lopez says it was informally discussed that instead of fighting this particular Filipino, he would fight a very young, very scrawny, other Filipino named Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao.
It was probably turned down over concerns about viably making the unlikely weight of an adult male (Minimumweight Division = 105 pounds maximum). It's an interesting thought, considering the connections you might make from Lopez to JMM. Lopez would retire a 108-pound light flyweight titlist in 2001 and Pacquiao now still fights at 147 pounds. He likely returns in April against a person.
Ala Villamore would not fight again, by the way.

Bernard immediately turned this around on Pascal and asked why he couldn't knock out someone who only does this.

Guess Who's Coming To Another Kickboxer Franchise Film...GIF Spotlight
In 1989, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Mark DiSalle's memorable Kickboxer franchise began. It's a beloved classic martial arts flick. But while Van Damme's time with the franchise paused there, the torch was passed with a new character to black belt and sitcom star Sasha Mitchell for not one but THREE sequels, from 1991-1994. Here, yet another lead was picked in Mark Dacascos (champion martial artist, Iron Chef presenter, Hawaii Five-0's Wo Fat) for the fifth Kickboxer installment in 1995. By this point, the franchise had a film that was as thinly connected to the franchise as you can possibly attempt.
Kickboxer: Vengeance (2016), however, brought the story back around to a revamp of Van Damme's original film. It wasn't a sequel. It was another take on the original story. This time, the torch passed to black belt and stuntman Alain Moussi as the action star but Van Damme was back and the franchise was really back in a big way. They've ordered another and it co-stars our own Mike Tyson. Interestingly, 1989, while they were releasing the original Kickboxer, Mike Tyson was cementing his status as one of the most dominant heavyweight champions in history, smashing Frank Bruno and Carl Williams, and holding every major claim to the heavyweight title that anyone could try to hoard in a corner somewhere. No one hid any piece of the by from Mike Tyson in 1989.

Boxing Hall Of Shame: Lazarte & Rioters VS Claudio & Casimero
In February of 2012, Mar del Plata, Argentina, the old Argentinian insect known as Luis Alberto Lazarte, among the sport's most flagrantly dirty and tiny fighters, took on young Filipino John Riel Casimero for one chaotic evening that ended in this way:
Reportedly, Lazarte, while being stopped for a 10th-round TKO, innocently asked referee Eddie Claudio if he wanted to make it out alive. Thereabouts, a riot happened. The IBF sanctioned this bout and handed down a decision that they'd not be involved in another Lazarte match, anywhere in the world, for life. Lazarte was about forty-years-old by this point however, and the WBA had no problem sanctioning his bouts afterward. Casimero, Sean Gibbons (Casimero's corner man) and referee Claudio were all assaulted. Gibbons had a broken rib, and Claudio needed stitches, according to Dan Rafael. This was not one of boxing's more glorious nights, let alone Argentina's. At least the ring was furnished.

Henry Cooper Lays Muhammad Ali Down For A Spell: GIF Spotlight
In June of 1963, a very talkative, very confident, 18-0 contender from Kentucky took on a British heavyweight champion and future European heavyweight champion in 27-8-1 Henry Cooper. The Kentuckian, later known as Mister Muhammad "The Greatest" Ali, had a little British grit in his gravy before he could go home to the states. Sir Henry went for it with no regard for likelihood and dropped The Greatest down like a ton of bricks in the fourth round. There is no great fighter that can't be pushed by a good fighter when the stars align.
That said, the next round, after a controversial recovery, the Kentuckian forced a referee stoppage, technical knockout, from a severe cut around Cooper's eye. In his very next fight, future Muhammad Ali wouldn't get caught with a shot like that in taking Sonny Liston's world title and shocking the world. Henry Cooper would get a shot at that title in a rematch with future Ali, and, again, suffer a TKO on another cut, in 1966. Presumably in a backroom deal, Joe Frazier would buy Cooper's left hook and use it on Ali several time to great avail. That's just a rumor. Rumor, presumption, six of one, half a dozen of another. Don't quote me on any of this.

In August of 2014, Mike Tyson sat in on FS1's broadcast of Sammy Vazquez VS James Stevenson, as commentator and Vazquez representative. During the fourth round, Mike had an interesting exchange where he gave his old opponent, James Tillis, some props for damage done.

Raul Marquez:
"Mike, were you ever hurt by body shots in your career?"
Mike Tyson:
"Absolutely- James Tillis. When I fought James Tillis-When I fought James Tillis, oh, man, I couldn't even move. I went straight from the fight right to the bedroom."
This was the twentieth fight of Mike's career, and Tillis was the very first to take him the distance. It was scheduled for 10.

The Shirt That Delighted, The Shirt That Disgusted: GIF Spotlight
As best as I can tell, this footage is from a now defunct outlet's interview, The Fight Countdown. But if they're out there somewhere and I've missed it, credit to them. Either way, this is from back when the heavyweight division's controversy, almost incomprehensibly, was about a mere shirt. Former cruiserweight champion and heavyweight titlist David Haye had been preparing to destroy the division's giant brothers, the Klitschkos, and he had a shirt to display his intentions, portraying himself with Wladimir and Vitali's severed heads. The controversy was that the Klitschko family found this appalling and over the line. Amusingly, Wladimir's dear friend and HOF trainer, Emanuel Steward, took one look at Haye's shirt and he could not be more enthused!
David's only fought four times since his unanimous decision defeat to Wladimir Klitschko in 2011, thanks in part to being riddled with injuries from a grueling sport. That said, he is scheduled to fight Tony Bellew this year. Even despite the inactivity, he may be able to get another big win on his record. Either way, making Emanuel this happy is one of the biggest wins you can ask for, if you ask me.

Jersey Joe Tries To Hypnotize Joe Louis With His Shuffle: GIF Spotlight
A joy of boxing is seeing Jersey Joe shuffling his shuffle, confidently plotting and scheming and baiting traps all the while. Sometimes it's even like he tries to hypnotize his opponent. In June of 1948, Walcott got his rematch for the controversial decision he'd suffered the year before against the great Brown Bomber. Again, he displayed his beautiful skills and hypnotic shuffle, but, this time, Joe Louis didn't let the judges make a decision. In 1951, Walcott would go on to win the heavyweight title against Ezzard Charles and become the oldest fighter to win the heavyweight championship of the world, at age 37. That record would hold through the fifties, the sixties, the seventies and the eighties. George Foreman's victory over Michael Moorer in 1994 is the record to beat now. Foreman was miraculously 45. Not to instigate, but the twice-retired yet svelte Vitali Klitschko is now 46.

A Reference List For Boxers & PED/Banned Substance Allegations & Test Results
This page is going to be as full a sourced list as we can for your reference on fighters who have been caught or alleged to have used banned substances, whether assumed recreational drugs or performance-enhancing drugs. If you want something on here in a hurry, leave a comment. If something is wrong, please leave a comment, and if reasonable, a link to information you want in.
Most of these are officially recognized, but I'm trying to include asterisks where it's a lot of smoke with no fire officially. The fighters are meant to all be linked to their Boxrec pages with sources to the positive test coverage. This is not a judgment of the fighters, adjudication of their cases and whether excuses or reasons are plausible. It's just the red flags out on various guys. Some of these are from dishonour, in my opinion.

Bob Hazelton's sad story with performance enhancing drugs had to do with, in his narrative, beginning to take steroids to gain weight after suffering at the hands of a much heavier George Foreman. He claims he lost to Lucian Rodriguez in his penultimate bout because of a groin infection caused by his steroid usage. By 1989 he was essentially permanently crippled by steroid abuse symptom.

Shane Mosley testified to supposedly inadvertently using EPO for a fight with Oscar De La Hoya (he went 2-0 against De La Hoya.) He was later drilled about this when attempting to make a bout with Zab Judah, by Mr. Judah, who wanted additional tests, back in 2008. Mosley passed his professional tests, but admitted to this usage in court.

Toney, James
James was written up in The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times.
Plead: Not Guilty. "I don't do drugs, period."
Reasoning: Result of medications prescribed after surgical repair of ruptured left biceps and triceps tendons.
Substance: Nandrolone, anabolic steroid
Backlash: The only reason James isn't thought to be a major heavyweight titlist is because after decisively defeating John Ruiz for the WBA title, the decision was changed from a unanimous decision for Toney to a no decision. It would've made James a four-weight major titlist across five weight classes, from middleweight to heavyweight (skipping light heavyweight).

Wladimir Klitschko's Paw Opener KD: GIF Spotlight
In March of 2001, Wladimir Klitschko defended a then-lightly-regarded WBO heavyweight title against another very large man with a very large punch named Derrick Jefferson. Derrick, perhaps, was and is still best known for an unlikely heavyweight classic with Maurice Harris on HBO. I believe he was briefly a Ring-ranked contender. Unlike the way fans became used to Klitschko boxing, this one was just a short, brutal, kill or be killed, heavyweight action fight that wasted no time at all for either fighter.
Recently, Vasyl Lomachenko has been highlighted as pawing/batting down an opponent's guard to land his shot like this, although I don't recall seeing it followed by a dramatic flattening just yet. This is a beauty. Open him up, put him down. Boxing.

Naseem Hamed Stars In: The Damnedest Uppercut (GIF Spotlight)
Another excellent "Boom Boom," Mr. Tom Johnson, attempted to unify his IBF Featherweight Title with Prince Naseem Hamed's WBO Featherweight Title in February of 1997, at London Arena. Courageously trying to adjust to Hamed's uncannily awkward style, Johnson was met with awkward power punch after awkward power punch, as Hamed shook off every attempt to thwart him. The end came on one of the damnedest uppercut finishes I've seen land. Of all the fast, strangely thrown haymakers of the night, this took the cake:
How Hamed found the shot, the combination of anticipation and speed, it's eerie. After some false starts, Johnson found it in him to even get up from this shot before the count was up, but it was rightfully waved off by referee Rudy Battle.

James Toney Meets A Mouthy Opponent: GIF Spotlight
Advertised as a South American champ but seemingly wrongfully billed as a debutant on Boxrec, currently, Carlos Silva came to put on a spirited effort against hot prospect/contender James "Lights Out" Toney, who would wind up becoming a classic fighter. But Silva also showed up to amuse the commentators who joked that this was not a stare down but a jaw down. I think it looks like he's going to try to cannibalize James Toney, who remains icy and unfazed by the threat. This match took place in 1990. James became middleweight champion of the world the following year, and many a lights were turned out since.
