That's So Ray, Man: GIF Spotlight

Ray Leonard scored one of the most devastating knockouts in his career during his first official defense of the welterweight championship of the world, against Dave 'Boy' Green. The atmosphere was tense going in. Both fighters were amped for the competition and showing it before the fight started. This GIF pretty much sums up Ray Leonard:

Show off with Ali shuffle, brutalise opponent, give Ali victory pose, show sportsmanship. That's so Ray, man. Polite Alpha Maleness.

Ray Leonard to commentator Chris Schenkel, during the post-fight interview:
"Well, in my whole career of ten years, this is the first time I really was scared. Because I hit the guy, with a dynamite left hook, and, I mean, he was laying out. I really was scared for him."

And, again, in slow motion:

Brutal. SRL KO4 Dave 'Boy' Green, the 31st of March, 1980.

Yet Another Memorable Shannon Briggs Weigh-in Event: GIF Spotlight

From the Show Sports Youtube Channel, Shannon Briggs weighs in for his fight in Panama. It's a funny moment as Briggs first seems to be humoured by his opponent, then decides to stay classy by grabbing the opponent by the throat. A notoriously edgy Roberto Duran (in his heyday, at least) then gets between them, enjoying Briggs' show and getting a hug. Briggs had been yelling "Let's go, champ!" as he has been, to Wladimir Klitschko, who isn't there. Then he says "I'm with the champ!" as he puts his arm around Duran. It's pretty amusing.

Shannon will fight veteran Hungarian Zoltan Petranyi, with 21 losses and 14 of them by knockout. He is coming off of a KO3 defeat to a fighter with 5 fights under his belt. Petranyi was stopped by Denis Boytsov in 2005. Boytsov was outpointed by Alex Leapai in 2013. Briggs calls Leapai a bum and says Wlad should fight him instead of "bums" like Leapai in 2014. It feels like some type of a circle is now complete!

You Can't Judge A Boxer By Looking At The Cover: Quote Spotlight, With Paulie Malignaggi

Last month, Paulie Malignaggi sat in as FS1 commentator for former opponent Pablo Cesar Cano's match with Juan Carlos Abreu (not to be confused with Abregu). During round three, fellow commentator Brian Custer takes a turn with Paulie over Cano's decidedly deceptive appearance. Paulie backs up the common sentiment that he is definitely a strong puncher. Malignaggi also touches on his observations of standard Mexican physiques and boxer physique in general with these statements:

". . .A lot of the Mexican fighters, you know, they don't come in muscular, but, at the same time, you know, they're still strong.

. . .You can't let the lack of muscular physique fool you. Because it doesn't necessarily mean punching power. It doesn't necessarily translate to punching power, or lack of it."

We've all seen the soft, and/or scrawny fighters come in and demonstrate shocking punching power, or surprisingly show they won't be pushed around by stockier men, and we've all seen those fighters who look like Mr. Universe contestants who don't seem capable of cracking an egg or particularly strong in a clinch or regularly getting pushed back by stick figure types. It seems there's always a reminder in just about any walk of life that you never have any idea what a person is by looking at them. I know there's a Cosby reference in here somewhere but probably best leave it alone.

Sergey Kovalev, "Victim" of Sparring Droppage Rumour? Quote Spotlight

It's always worth taking, but always worth taking with a grain of salt, when these sparring rumours start to go around. But, Otis Grant, former titlist, and currently of Grant Brothers Boxing Gym, has dropped an interesting rumour on us about Sergey Kovalev's sparring preparation for Jean Pascal this Saturday night, while making predictions on an outcome:

"Skill for skill, I think Pascal's got better skills than Kovalev. . .Word on the street also is that Kovalev been having rough training camp, you know. I heard that he's been getting dropped by his sparring partners in training and all of that. . .I heard straight out of the gym that he was training at that he's been dropped three times, in preparation for this fight."

I've heard some doozies in my time-some truly hilarious sparring droppage "leaks" that sounded as fake as can be (not long ago, about Floyd Mayweather for Canelo Alvarez) and some seemingly credibly ones, in hindsight, about Chad Dawson before the Andre Ward match, for instance. I don't know what to think about this one. Could it be some gamesmanship "leaked" from a rival camp or some betting gamesmanship "leaked" from Kovalev's own camp? Is it a genuine leaking of a genuine and disturbing camp for Kovalev? Is it just an off-the-cuff fast one from Otis Grant himself? This is the boxing business. God knows. Either way, Grant mentions Pascal is his own hometown guy and personal friend who he is pulling for. You decide.

Even Excitement Must Wait: Quote Spotlight, With Sergey Kovalev

Amazing as it is to think, one of the big fan favourites of the current boxing scene and currently owning three of the four major regarded ABC titles in his weight class, Sergey Kovalev, always exciting, had very little interest in him early on. So little, in fact, that he had this to say:

"I fought like three years for free, just looking for any promoter. You know, *any* but nobody wants to sign me."

This was quoted from the Boxing's Finest Youtube mini-documentary on Sergey, who will be showing his can't-miss style against former champion and current TBR & RING #3 contender Jean Pascal in Montreal, next week.

Leonard Nimoy Demonstrates Judo Chop With Boxing Gloves: GIF Spotlight

Legendary actor Leonard Nimoy starring in 1952 boxing film Kid Monk Baroni, with some of the more unusual choreography of pugilistic cinema. I can hear Lampley calling this one now.

"A chop to the kidney! A chop to the shoulder! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! A chop to the shoulder! A chop to the shoulder! A chop to the collar bone! A chop to the neck! A chop to the shoulder! You want it in the shoulder again? Bang! Bang! Bang!"

Teddy Atlas On Antonio Tarver: Quote Spotlight

Teddy Atlas paid Antonio Tarver an enormous compliment after he dominated Johnathon Banks on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights. While he wasn't particularly impressed with defeating Banks by itself, he said of Tarver's early pugilistic accomplishments:

"Tarver was one of the great amateur fighters in U. S. history."

The 46-year-old was a 1996 Light Heavyweight Olympian and continues to campaign for a world title at heavyweight. Stranger things have happened. Some of them to Roy Jones Junior.

Referee Marcus McDonnell, Shhhhh Shh Shh: GIF Spotlight

Yesterday, at the The O2 Arena, Tyson Fury and Christian Hammer had a decent heavyweight scrap. Fury continued to maintain his status as a higher level of contender in stopping the respectable fringe contender. But Referee Marcus McDonnell thinks he should hush up. Fury has been shh'd with a whole bag of shh. This might be the only man to shh Tyson Fury. Even if only for a moment.
