Sergey Kovalev, "Victim" of Sparring Droppage Rumour? Quote Spotlight
It's always worth taking, but always worth taking with a grain of salt, when these sparring rumours start to go around. But, Otis Grant, former titlist, and currently of Grant Brothers Boxing Gym, has dropped an interesting rumour on us about Sergey Kovalev's sparring preparation for Jean Pascal this Saturday night, while making predictions on an outcome:
"Skill for skill, I think Pascal's got better skills than Kovalev. . .Word on the street also is that Kovalev been having rough training camp, you know. I heard that he's been getting dropped by his sparring partners in training and all of that. . .I heard straight out of the gym that he was training at that he's been dropped three times, in preparation for this fight."
I've heard some doozies in my time-some truly hilarious sparring droppage "leaks" that sounded as fake as can be (not long ago, about Floyd Mayweather for Canelo Alvarez) and some seemingly credibly ones, in hindsight, about Chad Dawson before the Andre Ward match, for instance. I don't know what to think about this one. Could it be some gamesmanship "leaked" from a rival camp or some betting gamesmanship "leaked" from Kovalev's own camp? Is it a genuine leaking of a genuine and disturbing camp for Kovalev? Is it just an off-the-cuff fast one from Otis Grant himself? This is the boxing business. God knows. Either way, Grant mentions Pascal is his own hometown guy and personal friend who he is pulling for. You decide.

Can you trust that Grant person? Anyway, it is well known, (from others and film clips,) that Kovalev trains with NO spirit at all! If he did get dropped in sparring, it is not that unusual! Unlike Mayweather who punishes his sparring partners, Kovalev tends to lighten-up on them, at least from the few Clips I've seen! It seems Grant had a hateful attitude toward Kovalev when he revealed secrets about Kovalev!
