Brandon Rios Gets Down: GIF Spotlight

Brandon Rios did an interview for Fight Hub TV while training for his match with Manny Pacquiao in 2013. Being known as a gym clown, he began to dance for the camera, then segued into a demonstration on what a Zumba class is like. Brandon Rios is pure entertainment, in and out of the ring.

Brandon Rios' Retrospectively Cringeworthy Quote On Pacquiao VS Margarito

Brandon Rios, before he'd reached the major world title fight scene, back in 2010, was working alongside Antonio Margarito in Robert Garcia's gym. Margarito's match with Manny Pacquiao was coming up HBO's 24/7 lead-up documentary was being filmed, which, perhaps surprisingly, was a four-part series. When the two gym buddies were interviewed in the second episode of the four, with Margarito's arm slung around Brandon's shoulder, Brandon made his opinion on the outcome clear.

Brandon Rios on Pacquiao VS Margarito, 2010:

"Pacquiao's making excuses that he's not training, he's missing the election,
all that. But, you know what? To me, I think he's scared, and Freddie Roach is
scared, 'cause he's not gonna be the superstar no more. He's just going to be
a-maybe-uh, super, maybe. But the star that's coming up is going to be Margarito.
I wouldn't be surprised if he tried to cancel the fight, saying that 'I hurt my hand.'
or something, just 'cause he's scared."

To think that a few years down the line, Pacquiao would've dominated and beat up both of these fellows after this comment is sort of funny. I don't believe either won a single round out of twelve a piece against the littler tornado. I guess we all need a serving of crow in our diet, at some point. Incidentally, there is talk of Tony Margarito coming back to boxing, against all odds.

Brandon Rios' Weight, With Unofficial/Rehydration Weights List

For our resource regarding all rehydration weights in our file, please see this link:
Fight Night Boxing Weights: A List Of Unofficial Weigh-in Weights After Rehydration

Last Updated: 24th of January, 2015

This page is here for your reference, comprised of all talk of Brandon Rios' weights in the ring that I find relevant, with as full a list as I can find of his unofficial/rehydration weights (and where they went unlisted), or what he likely weighed on fight night, going into the ring, as opposed to his listed official weigh-in weights, which are often misleading in a fighter's career. If you have a source to a missing weight you want to see up here, please link me to a source, so that I may verify it myself. Same for all corrections would be helpful. I will update this page as new information is collected. Thanks to HBO for their focusing on this detail when they are able in their broadcasts, as they have led the pack on this for all other channels. Please note, earlier fights before HBO that I've seen from other channels do not ordinarily do unofficial weights, so little will be found about what Rios weighed on fight night for most of his pre-title career.

Rios' history with weight is especially of note for his struggle in the choice to fight well below where he is comfortable.

Jim Lampley mentions when HBO's Tale of the Tape is featured, with video of Brandon Rios having to strip completely naked to attempt to make weight: "It was reported in one circle that he went four days without eating. That sounds a little bit hard to believe. But he was sipping tiny sips of water yesterday, into which his manager Cameron Diaz-or Cameron Dunkin, I should say-was pouring small, half tablespoons of salt. I don't really understand that but we can speculate all night about it."

July:

VS Urbano Antillon - Contested at Lightweight:

Al Bernstein says:
"The only number to look at is Brandon Rios had a little bit of a problem making the 135-pound weight limit. He had to take his trunks off at the weigh-in to do it and, of course, we know he's planning on moving up to 140."

Showtime did not list an unofficial/rehydration weight for this match.

Boxing Quote Spotlight: Jim Lampley & Roy Jones Junior Agree On Pacquiao's Spite

Hilariously, before talking up Manny Pacquiao's kindness of character, the HBO crew, only moments before, had chimed in during the final round of Manny Pacquiao's showdown with Brandon Rios with:

Jim Lampley: "I think Pacquiao is enjoying looking at Rios's swollen, bloodied face."

Roy Jones Junior: "He is."

You've got to love it. Boxing commentary and coverage is politics. You can play up two completely contradictory angles to get people's attention and have it work on the same people like magic. Kind, compassionate Manny Pacquiao never wants to hurt his opponent much. Hey, nothing personal.  He doesn't buy into all of this adversarial bad blood. He just wants to make people happy.

. . .But he really enjoys staring at the damage his fists do! He holds a grudge! He will make you pay for your insolence and enjoy it! Bang! Bang! Bang!

. . .But, maybe he's just too nice about it. Maybe he holds himself back because of his religious nature. It's funny whether it's on purpose or not.
