George Foreman With A Big Hit On Joe Roman While Down: GIF Spotlight

The year was 1973, the place was Tokyo, Japan. In the fight after George Foreman blew out Joe Frazier in under two rounds, and the fight before he blew out Ken Norton in under two rounds, he made his first defense of the heavyweight championship of the world against 44-7-1 Jose "King" Roman. Joe wasn't a heralded contender, but he was game and he seemed incredibly psyched up for the test. In his fiery locking of eyes with Big George during the referee's instructions, he made a strange barking noise as he popped his head forward, as if to try intimidating the significantly bigger champion.

A prime George Foreman does not accept being punked and easily annihilated Roman in one round, bashing him controversially while he was down. Roman's corner snapped to it, in an uproar, and were met with the passive acceptance of Referee Jay Edson. Edson declared afterward that it was not illegal, only accidental, also reminding that he did not call a knockdown (which incidentally appeared to be from a couple rabbit punches during Roman's defensively turning away). That night, George Foreman flirted with a disqualification loss to Joe Roman and Joe Roman nearly won an early grave from George Foreman. A few seconds after the incident, he was legally crushed, glassy-eyed on the floor. George Foreman KO1 Joe Roman.

George Foreman Impressed By Miguel Cotto's Punching Power: Quote Spotlight

Working as commentator, during a Top Rank broadcast of Miguel Cotto VS Paulie Malignaggi, in the seventh round, George Foreman says:


"Those body punches - sounds like a heavyweight throwing shots. Cotto can punch."

That quote came from a major world title match at light welterweight, almost exactly nine years ago. Thanks to the catch-weight agreement between the fighters and Geale's enormous unofficial weight from HBO, there is some controversy over last night's display of power from Miguel Cotto. Many fans find it hard-telling if a healthy Daniel Geale got a taste of Cotto's heavyweight-sounding punches and couldn't take them any better than he could take Gennady Golovkin's, or if a badly weight-drained Geale got to where he couldn't take hard shots off of anybody. With that said, Cotto looks to still be a true puncher at middleweight, just like he was at light welterweight. A true puncher is dangerous no matter who he's punching.

In January of 1990, George Foreman, trying to score a match with the heavyweight champion of the world (Mike Tyson), fought a name, Gerry Cooney. Gerry hadn't fought in about two and a half years, after getting obliterated by Michael Spinks. In essence, he was just a name. But Cooney was trying to pull his career back together for one last try, with Hall of Fame trainer Gil Clancy in his corner. Mike Tyson was geared for a fight the following month with Buster Douglas, so Foreman's apparent certainty on beating Tyson for the title got completely turned on its ear, even when he was still on his own winning streak. It would be Cooney's last match. But for George, he was in the middle of his legendary second career, and they were building up his record much like in his first career.

The opponents were fairly careful at this point. Cooney was likely to get knocked out, but because of his size and power, the danger was palpable from the opening bell of a rowdy 2-rounder that left Gerry in a heap. Not before he made an impression on Big George as a puncher, however. The following quote exchange happened between George and David Letterman, when he took his fresh shiner to Late Night. These days, George Foreman's son (Monk) is the boxer in the family and David Letterman is about to end his own historic run, as a talk show icon.

Here are the power quotes:

Foreman: "This is the hardest hitter I've ever been in the ring with. You fight-say, I've had about sixty or more boxing matches, and you only meet three genuine punchers throughout your career. Gerry Cooney, Ronnie Lyle, and a kid I worked with, by the name of Cleveland Williams. And, they hit so hard that it vibrates your body, even if you block it, it just goes right to you."

Letterman: "So, you would say Gerry Cooney was one of the hardest punchers you've ever met in the ring?"

Foreman: "No doubt. He's been-of the three. He hit harder than Joe Frazier with his left hook."

Letterman: "Harder than Joe Frazier?"

Foreman: "Harder."

Letterman: "What about Earnie Shavers?"

Foreman: "I never fought Earnie Shavers. . .Thank goodness."


Everyone knows about Earnie Shavers. But what's interesting is that he mentioned Cleveland Williams in sparring, but not Sonny Liston here, who he also sparred. Also, he doesn't consider Frazier in this instance as one of the three "genuine" punchers he's met in the ring? Then again, maybe he was still suffering from Cooney's left hook! It's always interesting to hear these guys rate their opponents, even if you take some things with a grain of salt.

George would take the heavyweight championship of the world from Teddy's fighter to become a two-time champion and the oldest heavyweight champion of all time. During Miguel Cotto's TERRIFIC HBO war with Ricardo Torres, way back in his light welterweight days, the 24th of September, 2005, there was a great exchange. It was about the concept of faking a foul and/or over-exaggerating its effects. This concept is obviously one that generates plenty of discussion in many sports. The exchange occurred right after the unofficial HBO scorer, Harold Lederman, voiced his displeasure at what he perceived to be faked low blows landed on Ricardo Torres and is one of those priceless George Foreman sticking points as a commentator. Here it is:


Jim Lampley: And, I am told that our interpreter, Jerry Olaya, heard the people in Torres' corner, between rounds, telling their fighter "If he hits you low again, go down, and make an act out of it. Try to get a point deduction." Which makes sense, incidentally.

George Foreman: It only makes sense if you don't have a lot of dignity.


Jim Lampley after a few moments of calling the action between them: Yeah, you're right, George. I agree. It makes a certain competitive sense but not honourable sense.

George Foreman: Nah. This is all about honour, what it all boils down to. Win, lose or draw. . .Get some honour into it.



George Foreman always kept commentating interesting, in my opinion. You didn't have to agree with him, and Jim Lampley didn't have to get along particularly well with him, but he was always a character to behold.
